In the Wake of the Hurricane Katrina Disaster President Bush Stated he would not only help rebuild New Orleans, But build New Orleans bigger and stronger. He also stated that he would attack Poverty in New Orleans by helping the renters in New Orleans Become Home Owners. That statement contradicts a bill recently passed that allows contractors to bid on jobs without filing an Affirmative action plan. Doesn't affirmative action insure that minorities are given equal opportunity for employment. The President claims by eliminating the paperwork requirement the recovery will be speeded up. It seems to me if you want to help the long term residents of New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast victims you should require that contractors give precedence to whirring local residents. The Federal Government in it's drive to eliminate paperwork is also waiving some documentation requirements. This will make it easier for contractors to hire low cost illegal aliens, again taking needed jobs away from the Gulf Coast. If you really want to help the poor people in the Gulf Coast Region why not set up some federal works programs similar to what was done during the depression and hire and train long term gulf coast residents at a fair and completive wage. Give people new hope with new and better professions.
